Melasma often appears as patches of pigmentation and can be influenced by sunlight, hormonal changes and pregnancy. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, on the other hand, may follow acne, picking, skin irritation or a procedure. Sun spots and other skin conditions can look different again.
For deeper skin tones, inflammation and aggressive exfoliation can sometimes leave darker, longer-lasting marks. That is why the most intensive treatment is not automatically the best first treatment.
A cosmetic consultation can help you explore your skin-care options, but it cannot diagnose melasma or rule out medical causes. If a mark is new, changing or unexplained, consult a GP or dermatologist before undertaking cosmetic treatment.
